OPTOS California

The Benefits of OPTOS California Digital Widefield Imaging

The OPTOS California is a cutting-edge digital imaging system that provides ultra-widefield views of the retina. The OPTOS California can capture up to 200 degrees of the retina in a single image. This expansive view allows for a more comprehensive assessment of the retina and its peripheral areas.

What it Can Detect

Optomap Images, using the OPTOS Californa, allow doctors to see a full view of the retina and apply different light filters to view various layers of the retina. This allows for quick and more accurate diagnosis of retinal disorders compared to traditional methods. Common eye diseases that can bee detected using the OTPOS California include:

  • Retinal Disease
    • Macular degeneration (build-up called drusen in the central vision)
    • Glaucoma (damage to the optic nerve)
    • Diabetic retinopathy (leaking or bleeding inside the eyes)
    • Hypertensive retinopathy (constricted blood vessels or bleeding)
    • Nevi (freckles)
    • Melanoma (cancers)
  • Retinal Condition
    • Holes
    • Tears
    • Retinal degenerations (genetic or age related)
    • Retinal thinning (lattice)
    • Retinal Detachment

How It Compares to Conventional Fundus Photography

Conventional fundus photography typically offers a limited view of the retina, focusing on only a small, central area. This restricted perspective can miss important peripheral retinal changes or abnormalities crucial for diagnosing a range of conditions.

In contrast, the OPTOS California’s widefield imaging provides a panoramic view of the retina, enabling us to detect issues across the entire retinal surface that might be overlooked with traditional imaging techniques.

Advantages of Wide-Field Imaging

  • Comprehensive Assessment: The extensive coverage of the OPTOS California allows us to identify and monitor retinal changes throughout the entire retina, not just the central area. This is particularly important for detecting and managing a range of serious conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, holes and tears, peripheral retinal thinning, and tumors.
  • Early Detection: With its ability to view a larger portion of the retina, the OPTOS California helps in detecting early signs of eye diseases that may be missed with traditional imaging. Early detection of conditions such as peripheral retinal degenerations is crucial for timely intervention and effective management.
  • Routine Use and Yearly Screening: We recommend the OPTOS California as part of a yearly eye exam for all patients. Routine screenings using this technology allow us to monitor your eye health more thoroughly and detect and monitor retinal disorders.

The Standard of Care

The use of advanced technologies like the OPTOS California is crucial for proactive eye care and disease prevention. By incorporating such technologies into routine eye exams, we ensure that you receive the most thorough and effective care possible.

Who may still need to be dilated?

  • Children ages 4-12 - their eyes may over focus and impact the results of vision testing by making the prescription seem too high or too low. A cycloplegic eye exam, using eye drops, may be necessary to accurately determine a child's glasses prescription. A side effect of these drops includes pupil dilation.  Retinal imaging is still recommended because it provides the best view inside the eye.
  • Patients with small pupils - dilation drops may be needed to improve image quality, typically older patients, patients on certain medications, or patients with certain medical conditions may need drops to aid in imaging. This will be discussed with the doctor if they are necessary.
  • Eye conditions - if a serious condition is discovered on retinal imaging, dilation drops may be used for more detailed imaging.
